I always knew that it was my calling to serve my fellow human beings. Over the years I have had the opportunity to do this through my work as a school-based mentor program coordinator, as a volunteer coordinator, as a sexual violence educator and counselor, and even in my roles as a preschool teacher and coordinator. These roles have shown me how important it is to meet individuals where they are and how important it is for people to have choices as they navigate and engage with the world. This has definitely influenced my decision to pursue midwifery as a career.

I am very grateful to have been able to have had all three of my births attended by midwives. Even though I grew up knowing that my own grandmother was a midwife, I did not consider a midwife attended birth as an option before my first pregnancy. So, I feel very fortunate to have learned early enough to avoid the possible trauma countless women have experienced in medicalized institutions. Knowing what I know, I have felt a responsibility to not only inform individuals of their choices in maternal care, but also to be a resource in providing that care.

My interest in becoming a midwife developed in 2013 after moving to Wisconsin and learning how midwife friendly the state was. This desire grew even more after seeing the disparities in maternal care women of color, especially African American women, experience and the resulting high morbidity and mortality rates. After a few twists and turns, including a move to a different state, I began formally training under a midwife in Appleton, WI in May 2018. In of September 2019, I became a student apprentice with Choice Matters Midwife Collective, where I trained under multiple midwives.

I have found so much joy in serving women in this community as a student, and am now licensed and taking on clients in my practice Baby Love Midwife Services. I look forward to being a resource for individuals who are looking for caring, individualized maternal care.
